Diet
Gemigons primarily eat gems, as long as the gem is softer than the gem they are made out of. While it is not common in the main city, gemigons that live in the wild or in far off villages will occasionally kill other gemigons for their gems. It is frowned upon by those living in the main city, but in the smaller towns it is generally essential for survival, as they are farther away from gem rich lands. Gemigons from all over, however, will bury dead gemigons and later eat their skeletons after they have decayed and grown out; this is a natural part of their culture and life cycle.
Gemigons are capable of eating meat, but gems are much more beneficial to them energy-wise. There are also not many other species on their continent, so they are very limited when it comes to non-gem food sources. Nearly every animal they could eat is much smaller than them anyways, so it would be a waste of energy to hunt unless there were absolutely no gems around. While gems are converted into pure energy that goes straight into their body, meat goes through the normal digestive process.
While they can eat vegetation, it does almost nothing for them and cannot be a gemigon's sole diet. Gemigons will eat the long grasses that cover Akator during famine, but other than that they generally stick to gems and meat. Too many plants in a gemigon's diet will give them a lot of abdominal cramps and discomfort, so they tend to stay away from it unless it's a special occasion. Fruit is much more tolerable to them and they love to indulge in it every once in a while.
Gemigons can only drink water that is hot, so they have to drink from the scattered hot springs around Akator. However, they don't need to drink very often, so the trip isn't much of a hassle.
